How to Shorten Links on iPhone and Android (No App Required)

· Guides · 3 min read

Learn how to quickly shorten a URL directly from Safari, Chrome, or any browser on your iPhone or Android phone — no app download needed.

You do not need a dedicated app to shorten URLs on your phone. Alias works in any mobile browser — Safari, Chrome, Firefox — and the whole process takes about ten seconds. Here is how.

Shorten a Link on iPhone (Safari)

  1. Open Safari and navigate to the page you want to shorten. Tap the address bar and copy the URL.
  2. Open a new tab and go to alias.live.
  3. Tap the URL box on the homepage and paste the link.
  4. Tap Shorten. Your short link appears — tap Copy to put it on your clipboard.
  5. Switch back to wherever you want to share it (Messages, Mail, Instagram DM, etc.) and paste.

Shorten a Link on Android (Chrome)

  1. Long-press the address bar in Chrome and choose "Copy URL".
  2. Open a new tab and navigate to alias.live.
  3. Paste the URL into the shortener field and tap Shorten.
  4. Tap Copy on the resulting short URL.
  5. Share it from your clipboard wherever you need.

Custom Links on Mobile

Creating a free Alias account takes about 30 seconds in any mobile browser. Once signed in, you can set custom slugs from your phone — tap the "Custom alias" field before shortening to set a memorable slug like alias.live/my-link.

Use the Browser Extension Instead (Chrome for Android)

Chrome on Android supports extensions. You can install the Alias extension on Android Chrome and shorten links with a tap from the extensions menu — skipping the copy-open-paste workflow entirely.

Share Sheets on iOS and Android

Both iOS and Android have a native Share Sheet you can open from any app by tapping the share icon. On iOS, you can add shortcuts to the Share Sheet using the Shortcuts app — create a shortcut that sends the shared URL to the Alias API and copies the result. This effectively adds "Shorten with Alias" as a share action on any app.

Bookmarking alias.live for Quick Access

Add alias.live to your phone's home screen as a web app for instant access. On iPhone: open alias.live in Safari, tap the Share icon, then "Add to Home Screen". On Android: tap the three-dot menu in Chrome and select "Add to Home Screen". The shortener loads instantly without navigating.
