A QR code that is too small fails to scan. A QR code that is too large wastes space. Sizing depends on where the code will appear, how far away viewers will be holding their phones, and how much data the code encodes. This guide gives you the numbers for every common use case.
How QR Code Scanning Works (and Why Size Matters)
A smartphone camera needs to resolve the individual modules (the small squares) that make up the QR code. The more data encoded in the QR code, the more modules it has, and the smaller each module becomes relative to the overall size. Short URLs produce simpler codes with fewer modules — which is why shortening your URL before generating a QR code always produces a more scannable result.
Minimum QR Code Size
The absolute minimum for reliable scanning is 2 cm × 2 cm (roughly 0.8 inches × 0.8 inches) at a scanning distance of around 20 cm (8 inches). Most phone cameras can handle this, but margins become thin. For any print application where scanning is critical, use the recommended sizes below.
Recommended Sizes by Use Case
- Business card — 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm minimum; 2.5 cm × 2.5 cm recommended. Keep the surrounding quiet zone (white border) clear.
- Flyer or A5 print — 3 cm × 3 cm minimum; 4–5 cm recommended.
- Poster (A3/A2) — 5–8 cm. Viewers may scan from 30–50 cm away.
- Banner or signage — 10–15 cm for outdoor use; viewers scan from 1–2 metres.
- Product packaging (small item) — 2–3 cm. Use a short URL to reduce QR complexity.
- Digital screens (social post) — at least 300 × 300 pixels. Higher resolution is better for display scaling.
- Presentation slide — 8–12 cm equivalent at full-screen. Ensure the projector resolution is high enough.
The Quiet Zone: The Border Your QR Code Needs
Every QR code needs a "quiet zone" — a blank white margin around all four edges. This is typically 4 modules wide (the width of 4 small squares in the code). Without a proper quiet zone, scanners may fail to detect the code's boundaries. When placing a QR code on a coloured background, keep the quiet zone white.
Print Resolution Requirements

Colour and Contrast
